Making A Claim
How it works
If the worst happens and you need to make a claim on your insurance, just how do you go about it?
1. Before you get on the phone to your insurers, dig out your policy details to make sure you’ve got the appropriate cover for the loss or damage.
2. You may have separate policies for Buildings and Contents insurance so you need to decide which policy you’re going to claim under. And do bear in mind the effect a claim could have on next years premiums.
3. Once you have decided which policy you're going to claim on, it's time to call up your insurer and get a claims form. If you simply haven't got time to fill in insurance forms, most companies let you make a claim over the phone. This way you'll save time and you'll probably have your claim dealt with faster.
4. Fill in the form as soon as you can. Bear in mind you may also need to get estimates for replacement and repair costs. If you've had to make any emergency repairs keep the receipts and invoices. You may need these as part of your claim. Your insurance company will probably have an emergency helpline to put you in touch with the appropriate tradespeople.
5. If you have been a victim of a crime you should also get in touch with the police as soon as possible.
6. Your insurer may advise you as to the appropriate contractor for your particular claim.
7. Your insurer may appoint a claims advisor/handler.
8. You should now call FFDR on 0800 197 1650 and we will carry out a survey and prepare a quotation within 72 hours.
9. Your insurer will then advise you of the contractor approval and work can commence
